DISCLAIMER: All clients with existing medical conditions or diagnoses are required to work with a licensed medical professional to oversee their care. Heather Cooan and the Soil to Soul Nutrition team provide wellness and nutrition guidance that supports general health and well-being but does not treat or manage any medical diagnosis. Our services are not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Please consult a qualified healthcare provider regarding any medical condition or treatment plan.

A cancer, autoimmune, complex, chronic, or rare diagnosis can be overwhelming, but you have more influence over your health than you might realize. Research increasingly shows that diet and lifestyle can play a role in managing chronic conditions. It's about creating a healthy internal environment that supports your body's natural systems and overall well-being.

By changing your diet, lifestyle, environment, and self-care, you can make living with chronic illness more manageable.

We can help you use your health history, lab results, and genetic information to create a personalized plan that supports your body. Together, we'll identify underlying contributors to your condition and enhance the effectiveness of your wellness journey!

What's the Right Dietary Approach for Your Body?

Each body is a unique combination lock of nutritional requirements, and those requirements shift as your body and circumstances change. Every diet is the proper diet…for some bodies at some point in time.

We use your lab results, genetic data, and health history to zero in on the optimal approach for your unique biology. This isn't about food alone. It's about every input that builds or depletes your terrain.

  • Decode your lab, genetic, and health history data to pinpoint your bio-individual nutritional needs
  • Understand how your nervous system and allostatic load shape your relationship with food
  • Uncover the terrain factors driving your symptoms and chronic illness vulnerability
  • Nourish your body with delicious, nutrient-dense food that works for your unique biology
  • Identify the mental and emotional patterns driving your health choices
  • Learn which daily inputs are building or depleting your terrain
  • Understand how your body systems interact and how to influence them
  • Optimize metabolic health as the foundation for everything else
  • Build the self-efficacy to make informed decisions alongside your medical team

Our Approach: Deep Nourishment

Deep Nourishment

The Goal Is a Life Where Every Input Nourishes.

Across your plate, your relationships, your work, your environment, and your inner world, every input either builds you toward wellness or wears you down. Deep Nourishment is the practice of building that life through deliberate choice, one input at a time, across every dimension of who you are.

How the Work Actually Works
What We Strive For

Quality Inputs

Everything you take in, physical, mental, and emotional alike. Not just the food, water, and air, but the relationships you keep, the work you do, and the way you talk to yourself. We are always reaching for inputs that nourish. When one depletes you instead, even when you already know better, there is almost always a reason running underneath.

Whole Food, Nutrient Density Proper Food Sourcing and Preparation How You Connect and Care for Others The Media You Consume How You Talk To Yourself Movement and Stillness Time in Nature Clean Air and Water Sleep, Light, and Rest
↓
Whether Your Body Can Use Them

Usage Capacity

Quality inputs only help if your body is in a state to use them. When stress is running in the background, whether from a diagnosis, a demanding life, or something the body never finished processing, the system reroutes its resources to survival, and even the best inputs cannot fully do their job. Usage capacity is whether your body can receive, absorb, and actually use what you give it.

↓
The Cog Turning Underneath All of It

Capacity Dynamics

Capacity is never fixed; it’s adaptive. It is shaped, drained, expanded, and built. Capacity Dynamics is the work of understanding what is pulling your adaptive capacity down and building more of it, including the patterns that have often been running for decades, quietly keeping the system in survival. This is the layer most approaches never reach. It turns underneath everything above it, which is why we go there.

The Whole Terrain Systems Analysis

How We Find Where Usage Capacity Is Being Lost.

To know which inputs to change, which are simple fixes, and which are held in place by something deeper, we read the whole terrain: the full internal and external environment in which you live. Click any layer to look inside.

Eight Internal DomainsThe Body’s Interconnected Systems, Read as One Whole.
+
Blood Sugar Regulation
How steadily your body handles sugar and insulin. Chronic stress alone raises blood sugar, and when it stays elevated it keeps feeding the very growth signals we want to keep quiet.
Immune Capacity and Surveillance
Your body’s ability to spot and respond to what does not belong. The immune system and nervous system talk constantly, so living in a stress state quietly turns immune watchfulness down and inflammation up.
Inflammation, Oxidative & Cellular Stress
The slow-burn inflammation and cellular wear that build up over time. Unresolved stress is not just in your head. It shows up as measurable inflammation in the body.
Hormone Regulation and Endocrine Signaling
The chemical messengers that run your energy, mood, metabolism, and reproduction. Because stress hormones sit at the center of the whole system, chronic stress slowly reshapes everything downstream, from cortisol to thyroid to sex hormones.
Vascularity, Circulation, and Angiogenesis
How well blood, oxygen, and nutrients actually reach your tissues. Something as simple as hydration changes how thick your blood is and how well everything gets where it needs to go.
Emunctories, Drainage & Detoxification
Your body’s exit routes, the liver, kidneys, lungs, skin, lymph, and colon that clear out waste and chemical buildup. Your genetics shape how easily you clear things, and steady hydration keeps every one of these pathways moving.
Microbiome, Digestion, and Gut-Brain Axis
The gut sits underneath nearly everything: immunity, mood, nutrient absorption, and inflammation all run through it. It is in constant conversation with your brain, which is why digestion and stress are so tightly linked.
Mental & Emotional Wellbeing
Your beliefs, your unprocessed emotions, and the stories running under the surface are not separate from your physical health. They live in the body as real, measurable patterns, and the ways you cope are signals about what your nervous system has been carrying, never moral failings.
Environmental DesignThe External Terrain. Everything In, On, and Around You.
+

The external terrain is the controllable input environment, the context within which all internal terrain exists. Depleting external inputs wear down the system no matter how much internal work is done. These are the levers you pull in daily life.

Nervous System Regulation, Stress Response & BiorhythmsThe Operating System Beneath Every Other Domain. Where Capacity Dynamics Works.
+

Think of your nervous system as the operating system running underneath everything else. When it is calm, your body can rest, digest, repair, and actually use the good inputs you give it. When it is stuck in a stress state, it pulls resources toward survival, and the rest of the work cannot fully take hold.

A lot of things keep it stuck on: trauma, chronic stress, unresolved grief, uncontrolled or chronic pain, toxins, and a steady diet of poor-quality inputs all hold the system on high alert. Each one adds to your allostatic load, the total wear and tear your body is carrying. The higher that load climbs, the less your body has left to work with.

At the deepest level, when the body senses ongoing threat, the cells themselves shift into a protective, locked-down state and stop running normally. Researchers call this the Cell Danger Response. When it stays switched on too long, it drives the kind of dysfunction that sits underneath chronic illness. Calming the nervous system is what lets the cells stand down and the body return to repair.

Some of the biggest drains here are not events but patterns: perfectionism, people-pleasing, overfunctioning, hyperindependence, and hypervigilance. These were intelligent once. They kept you safe through something real. They only become a problem when they keep running long after the danger has passed, quietly holding the system on and filling the load. Your biography becomes your biology. This is the water source for everything else. Until it is addressed, the soil cannot fully recover.

Genetic Predisposition, Nutrigenomics, Nutrigenetics & Epigenetic ExpressionThe Blueprint That Shapes Vulnerability and Physiological Capacity.
+

The blueprint that shapes vulnerability and physiological capacity across every domain above it. While the blueprint is fixed, its expression is not. Environment, lifestyle, and the inputs you choose can shift which genes are expressed and how. Your nutrition team uses nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics to personalize recommendations. Terrain-trained physicians bring pharmacogenetics, oncogenetics, and molecular profiling to inform clinical strategy. Together these lenses produce a complete picture.

Continual Optimization, Paced to Your Capacity for Change

This is not a one-time protocol. It is an ongoing process of reading your data, making changes you can sustain, and adjusting as you change. Every recommendation is paced to your capacity for change: what your body and your life can actually carry right now.

Soil to Soul Nutrition is a team of non-licensed nutrition consultants. We do not practice medicine, diagnose, treat, or prescribe. We work alongside your medical team to support your terrain, your capacity, and your quality of life.

Service FAQs

Can you work with me if I don't live near you?

Yes! We are an exclusively virtual practice and have clients worldwide. All services are delivered virtually via secure online platforms. Upon purchase, you will receive an email with access details and instructions. Sessions or digital resources will be available within the specified timeframe outlined in your service agreement.

Lab kits are shipped to your address and conducted in the privacy of your own home. Kits include pre-paid mailers that can be dropped off at your local UPS or FedEx location. Depending on the lab, turnaround times for lab work vary from 1 to 5 weeks.

Do you work with men and children as well?

Women are our focus simply because of the volume of Lichen Sclerosus cases we receive. However, we will work with men as well. We have many male clients on the oncology side of Soil to Soul Nutrition. We currently only work with children within the context of cancer.

What age children do you work with?

There is no strict age range. We will work with babies, toddlers, kids, or teens.

Do you work with pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Unfortunately, we can't work with anyone pregnant or breastfeeding. We use a lot of botanicals, and most of these haven't been tested for safety while pregnant or breastfeeding. You are welcome to return when you have weaned your child.

What types of cancer do you work with?

We work with people experiencing all types of cancer. We work with clients to improve their overall health and well-being, which applies to any cancer at any stage, including cancer avoidance, recurrence avoidance, and cancer treatment recovery.

Do you work with cancer patients during treatment or after treatment?

We work with cancer thrivers at all stages, before, during, and after treatment. All recommendations are customized to account for each stage of the journey and evolve with you as you progress.

Do I still need cancer treatment?

Yes. Nutrition is not cancer treatment-we wish it were! However, we require that all clients with medical diagnoses be under the care of a licensed physician to manage their diagnosis. Our work together will support overall health and well-being alongside your care team.

Will you recommend alternative cancer treatments?

No. Heather Cooan and the Soil to Soul Nutrition team do not provide cancer treatment consultations. They are not licensed medical professionals. All services focus on supporting individuals interested in improving their health through holistic changes in nutrition, lifestyle, environment, and psychology-not on directly treating specific conditions.

Can I stop taking my medication?

No. While you are certainly welcome to discuss the possibility of weaning off your medication with your doctor, Heather Cooan and the Soil to Soul Nutrition Team are not legally authorized to advise you to stop taking prescription medications. More importantly, discontinuing medicines without the approval of a licensed medical professional can be detrimental to your health.

How much are your packages?

We like talking to potential clients first to ensure we are a good fit for each other. We also want to hear your story and listen to what symptoms you have been experiencing. This way, we can better assess which package and tests might be best for you. Please apply to work with us by booking an intro consultation, and we will discuss further details.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, payment plans are available for many of the more extensive package offerings. We also partner with AdvanceCare to provide third-party financing options.

Does your pricing cover supplements?

No. Our fees do not include any nutritional supplements you choose to implement.

Are equipment recommendations included in your pricing?

No. Our fees do not include any suggested healing supports you choose to use (e.g., red lights, saunas, water filters).

Are other therapies you recommend included in your pricing?

No. Our fees do not include any ancillary support services you choose to use (e.g., therapy, chiropractic care, Naturopathic Doctors, acupuncture).

Are lab fees included in your pricing?

No. Our fees do not include lab assessments that you choose to implement.

Are Terrain-Based Physician services included in your fees?

No. These professionals should be engaged separately from Soil to Soul Nutrition.

Do you accept insurance?

We currently do not accept insurance, but we partner with TrueMed to provide letters of medical necessity that you can use to access HAS/FSA funds.

Will insurance cover my lab work?

Insurance typically covers blood chemistry testing if your doctor orders it. Functional lab assessments are often considered alternative medicine and are not covered under insurance. You may receive partial or full coverage if your insurance covers out-of-network labs. Few labs will submit to your insurance, but most will provide you with a receipt, which you can submit to your insurer to see if they will cover the cost. In many circumstances, you can use an HSA (health savings account) to cover expenses, but we recommend checking first to confirm. Fees and lab fees are usually tax-deductible if you itemize health care costs. Check with your tax specialist to be sure.

Where do I order my labs from?

We mail all functional lab kits directly to your home. If your doctor is willing to order, you may choose to go through your doctor for any blood chemistry tests covered by your insurance.

What do your recommendations look like?

Our self-treatment protocols are individualized for every client. We use your health history, lifestyle, symptoms, functional lab tests, conventional blood work, and genetic data to help guide us in providing you with health-building strategies and drug-free, all-natural protocols.

How long does the protocol last?

As long as it takes to get you feeling better. Everyone is so different and heals at different rates. It often depends on what you have going on. More complex situations can take a lot longer to heal. We work with clients for 6-12 months on average, though that may vary for you.

When will I start seeing results?

In a sense, the healing process is like steering a massive ocean liner. While correcting your course by one or two degrees may not seem to alter your position, three months later, you find yourself in friendly, uncharted waters! This process is a work-in-workout scenario. The more dedicated you are to your health and doing the work, the more positive outcomes you are likely to see.

Results are highly individual and may depend on 1) the length of time you've been experiencing chronic stress and 2) the degree to which the underlying stress has been present.

We cannot guarantee results; however, reasonable expectations are that symptoms will resolve or partially resolve as you begin to untangle the web of root-cause contributors to your disease process and optimize your terrain.

What is your refund policy?

Due to the nature of our virtual services, we do not offer refunds on any purchases. All sales are final. If you have questions before purchasing, we encourage you to book an intro consultation for guidance on selecting the right service for your needs.

What is your cancellation policy?

All services must be utilized within one (1) year of purchase. Unused services will expire after this period. If you need to reschedule a session, you may do so at any time. Missed cancellations may result in forfeiture of the session. Subscription-based services can be canceled before the next billing cycle, but partial refunds or pro-rated cancellations are unavailable.

What is your return policy?

As our offerings are service-based and digital, returns are not applicable. If you experience any issues accessing your purchased services, please contact your consultant for assistance.

Disclaimer for Cancer Patients

Heather Cooan and the Soil to Soul Nutrition team do not provide cancer treatment consultations. They are not licensed medical professionals. All services focus on supporting individuals interested in improving their health through holistic changes in nutrition, lifestyle, environment, and psychology-not on directly treating specific conditions.

Heather's protocol for her personal health journey is available here; however, supplement doses are not shared, as they were tailored to her specific case. Copying others' protocols or attempting to create a self-guided plan is discouraged, as it sometimes leads to unintended harm. The best approach for addressing a cancer diagnosis, in our opinion, is to research thoroughly and build a diverse team of both conventional and alternative practitioners to address the mind, body, heart, and soul.
